EPI 2 Flashcards
What is the episode infectious disease model?
What are the direct modes of transmission?
ouching / Skin to skin (e.g., fungal infections)
– Kissing
– Sexual transmission (e.g., HIV, chlamydia)
- Vertical (from mother to child)
* In utero / birth canal / breast milk
– Diseases spread exclusively by direct contact usually
cannot survive outside of host for long period
What are indirect modes of transmission?
Inanimate object (fomites)
– Becomes contaminated by pathogens from infected
individual or reservoir
– Usually can survive outside of host for prolonged period
What is infective dose?
organisms
required to establish
infection in group of hosts
What is the secondary attack rate?
Proportion of exposed
susceptible hosts who
develop disease
What is pathogenicity?
Proportion of
infections resulting in clinically
apparent disease
What is virulence?
Proportion of
clinically apparent cases
resulting in significant clinical
manifestations
What is incubation period?
Time from exposure to first symptoms
