enzymes in DNA replication Flashcards
1
Q
Helicase
A
uncoils the DNA double helix and splits it into two template strands
- breaks the hydrogen bonds between the bases
2
Q
RNA primase
A
adds a short length of RNA to the template strand of DNA
- this acts as a primer, allowing DNA polymerase to bind and begin replication - very important in the lagging strand
3
Q
DNA Polymerase III
A
adds nucleotides in a 5’ to 3’ direction
- can also attach to the 3’ end of the original strand
starts replicating next to the RNA primer and adds nucleotides in a 5’ to 3’ direction
4
Q
DNA Polymerase I
A
removes the RNA primer and replaces it with DNA
5
Q
DNA Ligase
A
seals up the leading and lagging strands
6
Q
DNA Primase
A
Initiates the synthesis DNA by creating a short RNA segment at replication fork
7
Q
SSB Proteins
A
Stabilizes the DNA molecule during replication
