Enzymes - Chapter 6 Flashcards
What do oxidoreductases do?
These enzymes catalyze oxidation-reduction reactions and transfer electrons between molecules.
What do transferases do?
These enzymes transfer functional groups between molecules.
What do hydrolases do?
These enzymes cleave molecules via the addition of water.
What do lyases do?
These enzymes add functional groups to a double bond or removes them to form a double bond.
What do isomerases do?
These enzymes move functional groups within a molecule.
What do ligases do?
These enzymes join 2 molecules in reactions powered by ATP hydrolysis.
What are apoenzymes?
enzymes without their cofactors
What are holoenzymes?
catalytically functional enzymes with their cofactors
What are the 2 kinds of cofactors?
- Coenzymes (small biological molecules)
- Metals
