Enzymes. ch3 Flashcards
what is an enzyme
Enzymes are globular proteins(3-D structures, spherical, water soluble) that act as a catalyst
what is activation energy
it is the energy required for a reaction to take place
why are enzymes so important?
All the reactions that takes place in a cell cannot happen without the assistance of enzymes
what do enzymes do to activation energy
they reduce the activation energy for a new reaction to occur
enzymes usually end in
‘-ase’
How do enzymes work?
They have an active site that is able to bind to a substrate which is complementary to the shape of the active site
describe the lock and key model
an enzymes active site is higly specific and is complementary to its substrate. Because they are complementary, they come together to form an enzyme-substrate complex (it is temporary). It then reduces the activation energy and the substrate is then converted to its product
what makes the lock and key model different from the induced fit model
if the substrate is not complementary to the enzymes active site, the enzyme-substrtae complex will not form
describe the induced fit model
a substrate does not necessarily fit inside the active site of the enzyme, so the active site changes slightly to fit the substrate to form an E-S complex. After the products are formed, the enzyme returns to its normal shape
give the similarities between the lock and key model and the induced fit model
- both form E-S complex
- both lowers the activation energy
