Enzymes and digestion Flashcards
What do enzymes do ?
They break down larger molecules into smaller ones so they can pass through the walls of the digestive system
Name 3 different enzymes
Carbohydrase, protease, lipases
What does carbohydrase do ?
Converts carbohydrates into simple sugars
What is one example of a carbohydrase, and what does it do ?
Amylase- converts starch into maltose
What does protease do ?
It converts proteins into amino acids
what does lipase do ?
It converts lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
What are lipids ?
Fats and oils
Where is bile produced and stored ?
Bile is produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
What does bile do ?
It neutralises the stomach acid and emulsifies fat ( breaks down into tiny droplets )
Where is amylase made ?
The salivary glands, the pancreas, the small intestine
Where is protease made ?
The stomach, the pancreas, the small intestine
where is lipase made ?
the pancreas, the small intestine
