Enzymes Flashcards
Enzyme
A molecule, usually a protein, which acts as a biological catalyst; lower the activation energy of a reaction
Catalyst
a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but can be used over and over again
Active site
Place on an enzyme where another molecule bonds and is changed
Substrate
the molecule that bonds to the enzyme and is changed by the reaction there; the reactant
What is an enzyme’s relationship with a substrate
Enzymes bind to substrates to fasten the pace of reactions
What can affect enzyme activity?
Temperature, pH, concentration
Temperature’s relationship with enzymes
Heat fastens the pace
Too high heat causes denaturing
Too cool slows the pace
pH’s relationship with enzymes
Too low of a pH causes it to slow
Too high of pH causes denaturing
An acceptable range causes the pace to fasten
Concentration’s relationship with enzymes
Increasing the enzyme or substrate concentration will speed up the reaction, but only until all of the enzymes have stuck or until all the substrates have an enzyme
kinetics
the study of the rate of reactions
