Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What is a substrate?
A
A substance that an enzyme acts on.
2
Q
What is an active site?
A
A region on an enzyme that binds to a protein or other substance during a reaction.
3
Q
How does the lock and key model work?
A
- Substrates will go into the enzyme’s active site.
- This will form an enzyme-substrate complex.
- The enzyme will either separate or join the substrates.
- The enzyme will release the product.
- The enzyme will have an empty active site(s) and can be used again.
4
Q
What is an enzyme-substrate complex?
A
A type of molecule.
5
Q
What temperature do enzymes work best at?
A
37°
6
Q
What pH do enzymes work best at?
A
7
