Enzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst
What is activation energy?
the minimum amount of energy an enzyme needs in order to display enzymatic activity
What effect do enzymes have on activation energy?
enzymes speed up reactions by lowering activation energy
effect of pH on enzyme action and reaction rate
high or low pH causes a slower action/ reaction if not fully denatured enzymes
Effect of temperature on enzyme action and reaction rate
if it is too hot, bonds are disrupted and proteins may unfold…if it is too cold molecules move too slowly and few collisions may occur
Effect of enzyme and substrate availability on action and reaction rate
Low enzyme concentration causes an enzyme to become more saturated, adding more substrate does not affect the reaction. Low substrate concentration means that the enzyme does not have enough substrate to act on, adding more enzyme does not affect the reaction
