Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes?
They are catalysts produced my living things
How can you usually make a reaction happen quicker?
Increase temperature
This would speed up the useful reaction but also unwanted ones too
What do enzymes act as?
Biological catalyst
What do enzymes reduced the need for?
High temperature
We knit have enzymes to speed up the relevant chemical reaction
What is the substrate?
The molecule changed in the reaction
What does every enzyme have?
An active site
How does the enzyme work?
The substrate has to be complimentary to the active site in order to catalyse
How do you calculate rate of reaction?
Rate= 1000/time
What are big molecules? (3)
Proteins, lipids and some carbohydrates
Why is it important that organisms break down big molecules into smaller components?
For growth and other life processes
What do enzymes called carbohydrases do?
Carbohydrases convert carbohydrates into simple sugar.
E.g amylase is an example of carbohydrase. It breaks down starch
