Enzymes Flashcards
Lock and key vs induced fit
Substrate is not perfect fit but shape of active site slightly changes to accodmodate the substrate
What does an enzyme do to a reaction
Lowers there activation energy
Factors affecting rate of enzyme catalysed reactions
Temperature pH Enzyme concentration Substrate concentration The presence of inhibitors
What is an inhibitor
A substance that reduces the rate of an enzyme-catalysed reaction
Competitive and reversible inhibitors
Permanent- effects are irreversible
Reversible- temporary
Competitive Inhibitors
These are molecules which are similar shape to substrate and fit into active site preventing substrate from entering
Non-competitive
Not shaped like substrate, instead bind to another part of the of enzyme which alters the active sites shape so substrate cannot bind
