Enzymes Flashcards
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance which increases the speed of reaction without being changed or used up in a reaction.
Give three functions of proteins in living cells other than acting as catalysts.
- Structural components of tissues
- hormones
- antibodies
In which three places in the body is amylase produced
1) Salivary glands
2) The pancreas
3) The small intestine
Where in the body is bile produce, stored and used?
Produced in the liver
Stores in the gall bladder
Used to neutralise the acid and make everything and alkaline as bile is an alkaline.
Why does the stomach produce hydrochloric acid?
1) To kill bacteria
2) To give the right pH for the protease enzyme to work.
Write down the word equation for aerobic respiration.
Glucose+oxygen-> Carbon dioxide+water+energy
What does Amylase do and where is it made?
It converts starch into sugar and is made in the:
1) salivary glands
2) Pancreas
3) small intestine
What does protease do and where is it made?
It converts proteins into amino acids. It is made in the:
1) stomach (called Pepsin in there)
2) pancreas
3) small intestine
What does lipase do and where is it made?
Converts lipids into glycerol and fatty acids.
It is made in the:
1) Pancreas
2) small intestine
What are digestive enzymes used for? Give examples for big/small molecules.
To break down big molecules into smaller ones. Eg Big molecules (starch, protein, fats) Small molecules (sugars, amino acids, glycerol, fatty acids)
