Enzymes Flashcards
What is a definition of an enzyme?
Enzymes are catalysts produced by living things.
A catalyst is a substance which increases the speed of a reaction, without being changed or used up
What are proteins made by?
Ribosomes
What is the maximum temperature an enzyme can reach?
45 degrees
What happens if an enzyme reaches higher than it’s maximum temperature?
The bonds holding the enzyme together break
Does the pH of a substance effect the enzyme?
Yes. Most are neutral, but not always
What does amylase do?
Converts starch into sugars
Where is amylase made?
The salivary glands
The pancreas
The small intestine
What does protease do?
Converts proteins into amino acids
Where is protease made?
The stomach
The pancreas
The small intestine
What does lipase do?
Concerts lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
Where is lipase made?
The pancreas
The small intestine
What does bile do?
Neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats
Where is bile produced?
In the liver, but stored in the gall bladder before being released into the small intestine
