enzymes Flashcards
what type of enzyme is catalase
intracellular enzyme that catalyses the break down of hydrogen peroxide in cells
what does catalase consist of
4 polypeptide chains and a haem group with iron
what does protease do
catalyse proteins into amino acids
what does amylase do
catalyse disaccharides and polysaccharides into monosaccharides
what are examples of extracellular enzymes
amylase, protease, nuclease
what is a cofactor
a substance that has to be present during an enzyme-catalysed reaction in order for the reaction to take place at its proper rate
what are two types of cofactors
coenzymes and prosthetic groups
what is the difference between coenzymes and prosthetic groups
prosthetic groups are part of the enzymes structure whereas coenzymes form temporary associations with enzymes
what ions does amylase have present as a cofactor
chloride
what happens to coenzymes during a reaction
they are chemically changed and need to be recycled to their original state
