Enzymes Flashcards
What are Enzymes
Enzymes are globular proteins that function as a biological catalyst
Denatured Enzymes
Enzymes that have lost their 3D shape/structure, causing them to lose their function.
Caused by unfavorable conditions (e.g. high temp, low pH, etc)
Active Sites
Active sites are the sites on the surface of an enzyme to which substrates combine.
Only specific substrates will fit into an enzymes active site (lock and key)
Factors that affect enzyme activity
Temperature
pH
Substrate concentration
Enzyme concentration
Presence of Inhibitors
Competitive Inhibitor
Competitive inhibitors bind to the active site of an enzyme, which prevents the correct substrates from binding.
Adding more substrates will reduce the effect of the inhibitor.
Non-Competitive Inhibitors
Non-competitive inhibitors bind to an enzyme but isn’t in the active site.
Adding more substrates will have no effect of the reaction rate.
Enzyme Inhibitors
Is a molecule that binds to an enzyme and blocks it’s activity.
Substrate
A molecule that an enzyme reacts with.
Binds with the active site.
