Biogeochemical Cycles Flashcards
1
Q
Carbon Cycle
A
- Plants take CO2 from the atmosphere via photosynthesis.
- Animals eat the plants. Both Plants and Animals perform cellular respiration, releasing CO2.
- Plants and Animals die and can be converted into fossil fuels.
- Burning fossil fuels releases CO2.
2
Q
Phosphorus Cycle
A
- Weathering: breaks down the Phos in rocks, traveling through soil into water
- Absorption: plants/fungi absorb phosphate ions from the soil water. Animals absorb the phos via drinking the water.
- Decomposition: Decomposers break down waste or dead organisms, converting organic phos into inorganic.
- Sediments: Some phos turns back into rocks.
3
Q
Nitrogen Cycle
A
- Nitrogen fixation by bacteria
- Nitrification by nitrifying bacteria
- (Assimilation) plants take up nitrogen compounds
- Animals eat the plants for nutrients
- (Ammonification) Wasted and dead organisms are decomposed
- Denitrifying bacteria break down the Nitrogen compounds and release the Nitrogen back into the atmosphere
