Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes
Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts by accelerating chemical reactions.
what do enzymes do
enzymes are the molecules that catalyse (help) chemical reactions in cells
is each enzyme specific to a particular reaction?
yes !
what is the difference between intracellular and extracellular?
Intracellular enzymes are the ones with their catalyse reactions WITHIN the cell
Extracellular enzymes are the ones with their catalyse OUTSIDE the cell
What are enzymes specific for ?
enzymes are specific for their substrate and increase reaction rates by lowering activation energy
Describe the induced- fit model of enzyme-substrate binding.
The induced-fit model proposes that the initial interaction between enzyme and substrate is relatively weak, but that these weak interactions rapidly induce conformational changes in the enzyme that strengthen binding.
what are the specific functions affected by enzymes?
Temperature, pH, Presence of inhibitors
what is the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction affected by
concentrations of reactants, concentrations of the enzyme
what is an induced fit model?
when the enzyme and substrate join together, the active site changes shape slightly.
What is a Phenotype
Phenotype is the name for the PHYSICAL characteristics
What is a Genotype?
Genotype is the name given for the GENETIC expression
