6
Q

Why is the shape of an Enzyme important

A

Enzymes are made up of specific 3D shapes to perfectly let the Substrate fit in to speed up the reaction.

Q

What are Catabolic Enzymes

A

Enzymes that break down larger components into smaller/simpler ones (e.g. pepsin, lipase)

11
Q

How does temperature affect enzyme activity

A

Raising the temperature would speed up a reaction while lowering the temperature would slow it down. Human enzymes work best at 37 degrees (body temperature)

11
Q

How does pH affect enzyme activity

A

Enzymes are very sensitive to changes in pH. Enzymes only work at a narrow range (6-8) and if the pH changes, the enzyme can change its specific shape and becomes denatured.

Q

What are Immobalised Enzymes

A

Enzymes attached to eachother or an inert

14
Q

Benefits of Immobalised Enzymes

A
  • Can be reused
  • Easy to separate from the product
  • More stable than a natural enzyme
15
Q

Uses for Immobalised Enzymes

A
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Textiles
  • Food
