Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes
Enzymes are biocatalysts present in the body that speed up the rate of reactions by reducing the activation energy required for it to occur.
substrate and product for -
- Proteases
- Amylase
- Lipase
- Maltase
- Sucrase
- Proteins, amino acids
- Starch, glucose
- Lipids, Glycerol+fatty acids
- Maltose, Glucose+Glucose
- Sucrose, Glucose+Fructose
How do enzymes work?
Substrate enters an active site in the enzyme which breaks down the substrate into its products. This is done through an enzyme substrate complex - when they bond. The products are then released from the active site.
Factors that affect enzymes
- Temperature
- pH
- Concentration of enzyme
- Concentration of substrate
What is Denaturation
When the temperature and pH go above their optimum level - causing the enzyme to change shape - and therefore cannot bond with the substrate. This causes it to slow down its activity and denature
