Enzymes Flashcards
Enzymes
Enzymes are proteins that catalyze specific chemical reactions without themselves being altered
Lock and Key Model
Enzyme and substrate fit exactly to form the enzyme-substrate complex.
Induced Fit Model
When enzyme and substrate join, they form weak bonds that cause the shape of the enzyme to change, creating complimentary shapes.
Denaturation enzymes and active site
reduces or stops their function.
The active site is the specific portion of an enzyme that attaches to the substrate. if the shape of the active site is altered the enzyme will no longer function and is said to be denatured.
Feature of a enzyme
enzymes allow chemical reactions to occur at a fast enough rate at body temperature for the body to function
Activation energy
Activation energy is the energy needed to start a chemical reaction. Enzymes function by lowering activation energy therefore activities can occur at a lower body temp
5 Factors affecting Enzyme Activity
- Higher the concentration of enzyme, and substrate
- pH optimum eg pytalin in mouth saliva
- Temperature
- products of the reaction must be continually removed
- Without co-factor it won’t combine.
