Cell Structure Flashcards
Cell membrane
the outer boundary of the cell that separates it from neighboring cells and from the external environment. its made up of double layer of lipid molecules and associated portions. it determines which substance can get in or out of a cell
Cytoplasm
thick fluid withinthe cell membrane and all the structures suspended in it. cytosel is the liquid part of the cytoplasm.
Vesicle
a membrane bound sac that transports materials into, out of or within the cell.
Golgi body
flattened, membranous bags stacked on top of each other. they modify proteins and package them in vesicles for secretion from the cell.
Mitochondria
spherical or elongated structure spread throughout the cytoplasm. they have a double membrane, and they release energy for the cell through the process of respiration.
Nucleus
contains the genetic material, mostly dna, Controls and regulates the cell, responsible for cell division.
Nucleolus
Composed mainly of RNA. Manufactures proteins
Lysosomes
Small spheres suspended in cytoplasm. Contains enzymes able to break down proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and some carbs.
Centrioles
A pair of cylindrical structures usually located near the nucleus. Involved in the reproduction of a cell.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Network of channels formed by parallel membranes. Provide a surface for chemical reactions, Rough has no ribosomes attached
Ribosomes
sight of protine synthesis, join to amino acids to make protiene
Cytoskeleton
helps cells maintain shape and internal organization, provides mechanical support to carry out essential functions
Inclusion
Chemical substances that are not part of the cell structure but are found in the cytoplasm of the cell. They pigment or give colour to most parts of the cell in the whole body.
