Enzymes Flashcards
Catabolic Reactions
Reactions in living organisms, which involve the breakdown of larger molecules and the release of energy
Anabolic Reactions
A chemical reaction in living organisms, in which smaller molecules combine to form larger one. Anabolic reactions require energy.
Active site
Small area on the surface of an enzyme which is complementary and binds to the surface forming an enzyme-substrate complex
Substrate
The reactant, complementary to the active site of enzymes, binding to it, forming an enzyme-substrate complex
Extracellular
Enzymes working outside the cell e.g. digestive enzymes which are secreted by the intestine onto the food to break it down
Intracellular
Enzymes working inside the cell e.g. enzymes involved in the release of energy in the mitochondria
Optimum
Most favourable conditions enabling enzyme to catalyse the reaction giving the maximum reaction rate
Enzyme
A biological catalyst
Catalyst
A chemical that speeds up reaction
Metabolism
The sum of all the reactions taking place in the cell
Active site
The substrate attached to this small area on enzyme
Product
The molecules produced in the reaction
Denatured
Active site changes shape
