Enzymes Flashcards
What is the enzyme for carbohydrates?
Amylase
What is the product for carbohydrates?
Sugars
What is the enzyme for proteins?
Protease
What is the product for proteins?
Amino acids
What is the enzyme for lipids?
Lipase
What is the product for lipids?
Fatty acids + glycerol
How can you tell a sugar apart from an enzyme?
Sugars end up in ‘Oze’
Enzymes end up in ‘Aze’
How do enzymes work most efficiently?
They have the highest rate of reaction at an Optimum pH & Optimum temperature
What is the pH like in the stomach?
Enzymes in our stomach would have a very acidic pH because the stomach has Hydrochloric acid
Why does the stomach need hydrochloric acid?
To be able to kill the bacteria in the food
How can an enzyme become denatured?
The enzymes become denatured when they are in too high temperatures or extreme pH levels (Too high/low)
What does denatured mean?
When the substrate can no longer fit into the enzyme at the active site.
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a catalyst which helps speed up reactions
What is an enzyme made of?
An enzyme is made up of proteins
How does an enzyme catalyse a reaction?
An enzyme binds with the substrate at the active site
