Cells Flashcards
What does the nucleus do?
It controls the activities of the cell and contains DNA, which forms the genes, on chromosomes.
It also carries the genetic information for making new cells or whole new organisms.
What does the cytoplasm do?
The liquid gel where chemical reactions take place.
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls the passage of substances entering and exiting the cell.
What does the mitochondria do?
Where oxygen is used and most of the energy is released in respiration.
What does the cell wall do?
It is made of carbohydrate cellulose to strengthen and give support to the cell.
What do the chloroplasts do?
They are green discs which contain chlorophyll.
What does the chlorophyll do?
They trap light energy for photosynthesis to make food.
What does the permanent vacuole do?
The space in the cytoplasm that is filled with cell sap.
It is important for keeping cells rigid to support the plant.
What do ribosomes do?
This is where the second stage of protein synthesis takes place. All proteins needed in cells are made here.
