enzymes Flashcards
what is a catalyst?
It is a substance which can alter or speed up a chemical reaction, without itself being chemically changed at the end of an reaction.
what is an enzyme?
enzymes are protein in nature. They function as biological catalysts. They can alter or speed up reactions. They remain chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction. They are specific in nature.
What effect does does the enzyme have on the activation energy?
It lowers activation energy
What is activation energy?
the energy needed to start chemical reactions and break bonds in chemical
what are anabolic and catabolic enzymes?
anabolic enzymes build up complex substances while catabolic enzymes break down complex substances.
what happens during the lock and key hypothesis?
the substances enzymes act on are called substrates. enzyme is the lock, substrate is the key. The 3D shape of the enzyme’s active site is complementary to the substrate. The enzyme binds with the substrate to form enzyme-substrate complex. Chemical reactions occur and chemical bonds are broken in enzyme substrate complex and products are formed.
