Enzymes Flashcards
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst speeds us reactions they do not get used up
What effects enzymes?
pH and temperature
What dose it mean if an enzyme is denatured?
The enzymes active site and substrate are damaged and they will no longer fit together.
What is optimun temperature or pH?
This is when an enzyme works quickest normaly neurtral pH and a high temperature
What is the subsrate?
The part that locks onto the active sight
What is the active sight?
This is the area in which the substrate locks on to
Where dose digestion start?
It starts in the mouth where food is chewed up and the enzymes(amylase)is added
Steps of digestion
Mouth Oesophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Rectum Anus
What is an enzyme?
They speed up reaction in the body they are made of proteins and act as biological catalysts
What dose villi do?
Small folds in the small intestine that increase the surface area of the small intestine which helps increase the speed of diffusion.
What do enzymes do?
They are involved in reactions such as respiration and photosynthesis
How dose the stomach digest food?
The stomachs muscles contract and relax churning up the food enzymes are added to help digest the food.
What is an organelle?
They make up cells
What is a cell
Basic building block of life, smaller parts of cells are called organelles
What is a tissue
A group of the same type of cells
