Diffusion and osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis
Osmosis is the movment of warer from a dilute(weak)soloution to a more concentrated(strong)soloution through a partialy permeable membrane
What is diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.it is a random movement of particles and it is a passive movement and requires no energy
Isotonic(same)
If the concentration of salutes in the solution outside the cell is the same as the internal concentration the soloution is isotonic to the cell.
Hypertonic(weak)
If the concentration of solutes in the soloution outside the cell is higher then thr internal concentration the soloution is hyper tonic to the cell.
Hypertonic(strong)
Is the concentration of solutes in the soloution outside the cell is lower then the internal concentration the soloution is hypertonic to the cell.
Solutes
the component of a solution
Problems with osmosis
Can cause the cell to burst, can cause the cell to shrivel up
What are partialy permeable membrane
Membranes that only let some particles through
What causes faster diffusion
Large concentration gradient(more particles already mixed)
Higher temperature(particles have more energy)
Latge surface area
What is a concentration gradient
A difference in concentration between two areas is called a concentration gradient.
The bigger the ?.?.?.? area to volume the more diffusion takes place
*Surface
Factors affecting diffusion
Concentration gradient
Temperature
Surface area to volume
Why are smaller animials normaly cooler then a larger animial
Answer:
The larger the surface area to volume the more diffusion happens
What dose dilute mean
Weaker less/concentrated
What dose concentrated mean
Stronger/less diluted
