Enzyme Inhibition Flashcards
What is the nature of competitive enzyme inhibition?
COMPETITIVE
Competitive inhibition occurs when inhibitors bind to the active site of the enzyme. They have a shape similar to that of the substrate. It is the difference between the concentration of the inhibitor and the concentration of the substrate that determines the effect this has on enzyme activity. They are not permanently bound, and so will eventually leave the active site, however this delays the rate of the overall reaction.
What is the nature of non-competitive inhibition?
NON-COMPETITIVE
Non-competitive inhibtion occurs when inhibitors bind to the allosteric site of an enzyme (i.e. not the active site). This alters the tertiary structure of the enzyme, denaturing the active site. These have a greater aaffect on the rate of reaction than the competitive inhibitors.
