Enzyme Action Flashcards
1
Q
How do enzymes speed up chemical reactions?
A
Enzymes lower the activation energy required for a reaction to take.
2
Q
How does the structure of enzyme molecules relate to their function?
A
-Enzymes possess an ‘active site’ (A small depression made up of relatively few amino acids)
-A substrate fits neatly into this depression forming an enzyme-substrate complex
-It is here that the reaction is catalysed, due to strain being put on the bonds of the substrate
3
Q
What is the lock and key model of enzyme action?
A
(See p.25 of Biology Textbook)
4
Q
What is the induced fit model of enzyme action?
A
(See p.25 of Biology Textbook)
