Environmental Studies Flashcards
Community
Group of different species that inhabit and interact in a particular area
Species
Group of very closely related organisms that are very similar to each other and are usually capable of interbreeding and produce fertile offspring
Individual
A single organism capable of independent existence
Population
Group of the same species that occupy the same area and can breed freely with each other
Natality
Birth rate in animals or production of seed in plants
Mortality
Death rate
Immigration
Individuals move into a population and stay
Emigration
Individuals leaves population and do not return
Environmental resistance
The total number of factors that stop a population from reproducing at its max rate
Carrying capacity
The population density that the environment can support
Competition
When 2 or more individuals compete for the same resources that are in short supply
Ecological succession
A predictable pattern of the gradual change over time in the types of species in a community following a disturbance
Social organisation
Structure of relationships within a group
Eusocial
Species that exhibit the highest level of social organisation
Biocapacity
The amount of productive land and water available to produce the resources we use and to absorb waste we produce
