What is the Antiquities Act?
First used to stop looting in the desert southwest, but presidents interpret it differently now to set aside NPs or NMs-think devils tower or grand canyon

Allowed presidents to designate forests as Federal Forest Reserves. Roosevelt made 141 million acres!
What is the history of the Forest Service?
At first, it was the Divison of Forestry, and Gifford Pinchot was 1st chief. Divison “R” was also created
What was the Wilderness Act of 1964?
Established a National Wilderness Preservation System and gave congress the ability to designate wilderness areas
How might wilderness be defined?
“…untrammeled by man…”
What was the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968?
gave Congress authority to preserve rivers for natural, cultural, and recreational value-No DAMS!
What is NEPA?
“Look before you leap!”
Made a broad declaration of national policy to protect the environment
What is the Clean Air Act 1970?
Authorized EPA to establish national air quality standards to protect public health and environment
What is the Clean Water Act 1972?
regulates discharge of pollutants into US waters and regulated safety standards
What is the Endangered Species Act 1973?
Gave a framework to conserve and protect threatened species and their habitats
What is the Homestead Act of 1862?
Indivuduals could get 160 acres of public land by working it as a farm
