Environmental Issues Flashcards
- How has the banana industry prompted the notion of fair trade exports?
-
- How is malnutrition different in developing countries compared to developed countries?
-
- Give an example of a cash crop and explain how it benefits the producing country and the importing country:
Coffee, rice, wheat, sugar cane, fruit used for business. Producing country receives higher amounts of income (though not always to their own people) and importing country has more supplies.
- Why is delivering aid in the form of food problematic?
Food can expire, pick up diseases, require lots of money for proper shipment.
- Why is the number of the farms decreasing around the world?
Farms are increasing in size, becoming more industrialized. Smaller farms can not compete against the large farms.
- Why are agribusinesses getting larger?
-
- Why are producers less able to withstand shocks in the global markets?
They’re usually smaller business, often run by families. There is less overhead, and their assets take a the financial hit. Also directly see their product, no buffer industries where prices get equalized.
- Name one way in which globalization has benefited your local grocery store:
More access to products, as well as more competition -> lower prices of some items.
- Name 3 factors contributing to industrial food waste:
surplus of goods (that expire too soon)
Logistical problems dampen grocery store recycling
Organizational diversity complicates restaurant waste management
- How does consuming meat result in the greatest waste in calories?
Animals need large amounts of feed to grow. It is efficient - the calories from the feed is much more that what the animals produce. With all that feed, instead of meat production, we could be feeding more people.
- How does climate affect food price?
Natural disasters, or simply winter coming early could cause a lower supply of food, which causes a higher demand of that type of food. Therefore the price of the food would go up.
- How does the prevelance of HIV/AIDS within a population affect food production within that country?
Dealing with disease -> less able to put focus on food production
- Name some ways that poor infrastructure affects food production:
Poor infrastructure = slower shipping
More expensive to ship larger quantities
- Why is food sometimes used as a weapon during conflicts?
People will become desperate for food
- How do wars threaten food security within a country?
