Environmental impacts and aspects Flashcards

1
Q

How to create an overall understanding of the env. impacts?

A

Understand the env. aspects of the org - what causes the impacts?

implement an EMS! data collection
Understand the context of the org.
What internal and external factors influence the env. performance? Orgs. structure, culture, resources and capabilities, PROCESSES interactions.
–> stakeholder analysis, process analysis, value chain analysis, LCA analysis - material analysis - input and output of resources.

Analyze the process to identify the impacts:
- qualitative mapping: create a flow diagram of inputs and outputs - identify sources of impacts
- quantiative mapping: create a snaky diagram with quantifications of these flows to know what to focus on
(root-cause diagram to more in depth analyze an certain impact)

Focus on scope 1 and 2, then eventually expand to scope 3
1 = direct emissions, owned or controlled by the org. e.g. industrial processes
2 = indirect emissions from energy, e.g. purchased energy, heat etc.

3 = other indirect emissions in value chain, e.g. from upstream and downstream

input from all employees in different sectors from the org.

monitoring and tracking, identifying hotspots
improvement programs

Q

What is an env. aspect?

A

Any element of the org that interacts or can interact with the environment.

They can be negative (harmful)
Positive (beneficial)
Direct (within the org)
Indirect (outside the org)

Q

How to asses the importance of the env. impacts?

A

Level of impact x probability (frequency)

sort in a table, use limit values

Q

How use the information of importance of env. impacts to expand scope?

A

Make sure all relevant activities, products, services and processes are covered
–> adress in env. objectives and targets, procedures, action plans (ev. reformulate)
Use the info in risks and opportunities assessment
prioritize areas of improvement and enhance pos. impacts

communicate,
Internally: top management, employees
Externally: regulatory authorities, stakeholders, suppliers and partners
