Environmental Impact Flashcards
What has an impact on the environment?
The production and use of materials such as metals, plastics and fuels have an impact on the environment
How is natural materials like trees, water and fossil fuels are used extensively, affecting the environment?
Some materials are used in the production of other materials, for example crude oil is used to produce petroleum, diesel, paraffin, etc. petrol is used to power vehicles. The petrol burns and gives off smoke, fumes and gases that are bad for the environment
What kind of materials are bad for the environment?
Non-biodegradable materials are a danger to the environment because they pollute the soil air and water. This affects the organisms that live in these environments
What gases are produced when electricity is released and explain
When coal is burned in a power station to produce electricity, carbon dioxide is emitted and contributes to the green house effect. Other gases like sulphur dioxide is also emitted. This gas causes acid rain that destroy plants and pollutes water
What and where has resulted in acid mine drainage that is destroying the natural habitat?explain
The mining of gold in the Witwatersrand Basin. Water containing leaks from unused mines and poisons the surrounding environment.
What is important to remember?
Although a certain material is very useful, its usefulness might be outweighed by the negative effect it has on our earth
Write the definition of:
Non biodegradable
Acid mine drainage
Acid rain
Non biodegradable means cannot be broken down
Acid mine drainage is when water containing acid leaks from unused mines and poisons the surrounding environment
Acid rain is any form of precipitation (rain, snow or hail) that is unusually acidic. It has a much higher concentration of acid than normal precipitation
