Environmental Health Flashcards
addresses all physical, chemical, biological factors external to a person, and all the related factors impacting behaviors
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
the branch of public health that is concerned with all aspects of the natural and
built environment that may affect human health
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
focused on the natural and built environments for the benefit of human health
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
concerned with protecting the natural
environment for the benefit of human health and the ecosystem.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
combination of solid-liquid-gas and can be man-made or natural origin
AIR POLLUTION
occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances including gases,
particulates, and biological molecules are introduced into Earth’s atmosphere.
AIR POLLUTION
may cause diseases, allergies and also death of humans
AIR POLLUTION
usually produced from a process, such as ash from a volcanic eruption,
carbon monoxide gas from motor vehicle exhaust, or the sulfur dioxide released from
factories
Primary Pollutant
modern smog, ground level ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate
Secondary Pollutant
are not emitted directly, they form in the air when primary pollutants react or interact.
Secondary Pollutant
These type of air pollution source is man-made sources
Anthropogenic sources
- Stationary sources
- Mobile sources
- Controlled burn practices in agriculture and
forest management. - Fumes from paint, hair spray, varnish,
aerosol sprays and other solvents. - Waste deposition in landfills which generate
methane. - Military resources
- Fertilized farmland may be a major source of
nitrogen oxides.
Anthropogenic sources
- Dust from natural sources
- Methane
- Radon gas from radioactive decay within the
earth’s crust. - Smoke and carbon monoxide from wildfires
- Vegetation, in some regions, emits
environmentally significant amounts of Volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) on warmer days. - Volcanic activity, which produces sulfur,
chlorine, and ash particulates
Natural sources
the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human activities.
WATER POLLUTION
often caused by the discharge of inadequately treated wastewater into natural
bodies of water.
