Environmental Chemistry Section 1.4 Flashcards
Define Passive Transportation
Movement of molecules that does not require an input of energy
Define Diffusion
The natural movement of molecules from an area of HIGH concentration to LOW concentration
Define Osmosis
The movement of water molecules across a membrane due to a concentration gradient (HIGH to LOW)
Define Active Transport
Energy is used to move molecules against the concentration gradient from LOW to HIGH concentration
Define Ingestion
Breakdown of food particles for absortion
Define Mechanical and Chemical breakdown
Mechanical: Physical breakdown of food (Chewing)
Chemical: Enzymes breakdown food into smaller particles
Define Hydrolysis
The addition of WATER breaks down large food particles into it’s smaller form
Define Substrate
The material on which an organism lives on
Define Ingestion and Digestion
Ingestion- The process of taking food into are bodies
Digestion- The breakdown of food ( Chemical and Mechanical)
