Environmental Chemistry Section 1.2 Flashcards
Define Acid
A compound that dissolves in water to form a solution with a pH lower than 7 ( Turns blue litmus paper red)
Define Base
A compound that dissolves in water to form a solution with a pH higher than 7 ( Turns red litmus paper blue)
Define Acid Rain
When chemicals released to form industrial processes combine with water to form acid rain
Define pH Meter
The PROBE is dipped into a solution and the meter indicated the solutions pH
Define Universal Indicators
Shows a wide variety of colors, each indicating a different oH when compared to a color chart
Define Neutralization
A reaction where an acid and base come together to produce water and salt
Define Buffers
A substance that can neutralize either an acid or base.
Eg. Tums
Define Orangic and Inorganic compounds
Organic- Contains Carbon
Inorganic- Doesn’t contain Carbon
Define Nutrients
Elements and compounds needed for living, growing and reproducing
Define Macronutrients
9 elements that are needed in large amounts
Define Micronutrients
elements needed only in small amounts
Define Optimum Amounts
Too much or to little can be harmful to an organism
Define Carbohydrates
Made up of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen ( Rice)
Define Lipids
Made up of many Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen atoms (Fats, oils)
Define Protein
Made of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen (Fish)
