Environmental Awareness Flashcards
the ability to understand the fragility of the environment and the importance of protecting it
Environmental Awareness
the ideology that evokes the necessity and responsibility of humans to respect, protect and care for the natural world from the threat of man-made afflictions
Environmentalism
Any substance found in the air at sufficient concentrations that could potentially harm humans, vegetation, or material; Anything in the air that is harmful to our health or to our surroundings
Air Pollution
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION:
lung cancer
arsenic poisoning
circulatory skin problems
lead poisoning
lowered lead levels
Gasses in the lower atmosphere absorb the heat coming from the Earth and the sun but prevent it from escaping to outer space
Greenhouse effect
Gasses that contribute to the Greenhouse Effect:
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Methane (CH4)
Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs)
Ozone Gas (O3)
refers to increased average temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth’s surface
Global Warming
caused by an increase of the amount of heat being received from the sun
Global Warming
the “average weather” of a place or the patterns of temperature, rain, humidity, wind, and seasons
climate biatch
shapes ecosystems and human economies
Climate Pattern
IMPACTS OF GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE:
- change in weather patterns
- stronger storms
- damaged corals
- rising sea levels
- more heat waves
- changes in animal migration patterns
- warmer oceans
- changes in plant life cycles
progressing faster than any rate seen within the last 2,000 years
Climate change
Climate changes effectes:
- High or Low temperatures
- Abnormal sign of Precipitation
- Sea level rise
Potential Impacts of Climate change to?
- Health
- Agriculture
- Forests
- Water Resources
- Coastal Areas
- Natural Areas
Potential impacts of climate change to health:
- Weather-Related Mortality
- Infectious Disease
Potential Impacts of climate change to Agriculture:
- Cropped yields
- More irrigation demands
Potential Impacts of climate change to Forests:
- Changes the composition
- Geographic ranges
- Health and productivity (to human)
Potential Impacts of climate change to Water Resources:
- Water supply
- Water quality
- Competition of water (agawan)
Potential Impacts of climate change to Coastal areas:
- Erosion of Beaches
- Inundation of coastal lands (abundance of people to coastal lands)
- Costs to protect communities
Potential Impacts of climate change to Natural areas:
- Loss of habitat and species
total amount of greenhouse gasses produced to support human activities whether directly or indirectly; usually expressed in equivalent tons of CO2
Carbon Footprints
it is the sum of all emissions of CO2 induced by your day to day activities in a given time frame
Carbon Footprint
destruction of ozone molecules by CFCs, chlorine gasses, and bromine gasses
Ozone Depletion
chemicals that destroy ozone molecules once they come into direct contact
Ozone-depleting substances
chemicals that destroy ozone molecules once they come into direct contact
Ozone-depleting substances
contamination of bodies of water that lead to the reduction of clean and drinkable water for all organisms
Water pollution
urban cities produce some of the highest concentrations of solid waste in a short amount of time amongst all other locations in the world
Accumulation of solid waste
refers to the decrease in variety of organisms on the planet due to threats of climate change which cause endangerment and extinction
Loss of biodiversity
type of development that meets the needs of the present generation without sabotaging and compromising the ability of the future generations to cope with their own issues
Sustainable development
The Four R’s:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover
