What are some examples of physical environment components
noise, lighting, temperature, space, vibration, wind, air pollution, radiation, and gravity.
What are some examples of Social environmental components?
social facilitation, conformity, privacy, personal space, territoriality, and crowding.
Why is it important to consider environmental and social components?
They can play a major roll in human action and performance
The natural environment is no longer so natural
What are the goals of environmental design?
Performance Support
- At minimum. the environment should do no harm
- Meeting the basic Physical, Physiological, and Psychological needs of the user.
Organizational support.
Transmit such messages to users as the nature of the organization, its structure, its values, and the nature of the work.
What are 2 principles of Human-environmental interactions?
The environment acts on people and people make changes to either lessen the effects of the environment or to alter the environment
A designer should provide the user with as much control over a work environment as possible
What are the 4 spatial distances used in social interaction?
First zone 0 –18inchs “intimate zone”
Second zone 18inches t0 4ft for close friends and everyday acquaintances.
Third zone 4 –12ft for impersonal and businesslike contacts
Fourth zone 12 + feet “Public zone”

Subjective feeling of too little space
What is density?
Measurable, number of people per space
