Environment Impact Flashcards
Climate
Cool: < 16.5c / Germany
Mod: 16.5-18.5c / France
Warm: 18.5-21c / Oz
Impact of temperature
Determines where grapes varieties grow
Flavour characteristics e.g. acidity / tannins
Latitude
30 or 50 degrees north or south of equator 50 north = germany 30 north = Italy/greece 30 south = SA 50 south = NZ
Altitude
Temperature drops = cooler climate
Sea
Warm climate & on the coast is cooling e.g. SA
Europe benefits from Gulf stream = warming
Rivers
Provide warmth by reflecting sunlight
Air
Cool air from sea & mountains
Clouds/fog/mist
Block the sun. Important factor in warm countries
Fog brings disease
Mountains
Barrier to bad weather. Extend the growing season
Slopes
Further from the equator = less sun
Soil
Relates to grape variety
Provide nutrients
Stones provide warmth at night
Weather
Extremes cause issues
Too hot = vines shut down
Too cold = dormant vines
Drought
Grapes can’t ripen & may die
Rain
required at certain times for flowering & after harvest
extra rain = disease & diluted flavours
