Environment Flashcards
what are producers
any green plants that make their own food—flowers, plants, trees, grass, algae, seaweed…and more
What are consumers?
any organism that feeds on other organisms
—1st level consumers are herbivores (plant eaters)
—2nd level consumers are carnivores (meat eaters), omnivores (eat everything), piscivores (fish eaters), insectivores (insect eaters)
what are decomposers?
return nutrients to the soil
what is biotic and abiotic?
Biotic- living organisms—animals, plants, bacteria, fungus, mold, insects…and more
Abiotic - any non-living items—sun, water, air, rocks, heat, soil, oxygen…and more
what is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a network of living and non-living entities that live in the same general area that interact with and depend on each other for survival.
what is a Food chain?
a transfer of energy from the sun to the plant to the organisms that eat
Food chains are sequences of the transfer of energy from one organism to another organism. Food chains start with the energy from the sun and end with the final consumer or decomposer.
what is a food web
the complex connection between all the food chains in an ecosystem.
Hula Valley reasons for it being drained, what happened and why, what good came out of it, and what negatives came out of it
it was believed that draining the wetlands could make available more land for farming. So the Palestinians living there were displacedand the Hula wetlands were drained.
For years, the Hula Valley ended up plagued with dust storms and underground fires as a result of the Hula wetlands being drained. And in the end, the project was so unsuccessful that it had to entirely reverse course.
