Pure Substances and Mixtures Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is a form of matter that is made of only one element or is a consistent mix of elements that has properties that are constant throughout the sample.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a grouping of substances that are distinct and can usually be separated easily. There are two types of mixtures: Mechanical mixtures (HETEROGENOUS MIXTURES) and Solutions (HOMOGENOUS MIXTURES).
Homogeneous Mixtures (Solutions or Alloys) are.
Made from different parts that mix together and look like one substance Mix together completely
Can not be seen as distinct pieces or parts
Are difficult to separate
Are usually gas or liquid
Hydrogen in nature is not found as H but as H2
Oxygen in nature is not found as O but as O2
Nitrogen in nature is not found as N but as N2
The halogens also exist as diatomic molecules in nature
Heterogeneous Mixtures (Mechanical Mixtures) are:
Made from different parts that keep their physical and chemical properties
Do not mix together
Can be easily seen as distinct pieces
Can usually be separated easily
