entropy Flashcards
what is entropy a measure of
the number of ways that a particle can be arranged and the number of ways the energy can be shared out between particles
how do you get a higher entropy
the more disordered the particles are higher the entropy
what value shows a high entropy
a large positive entropy shows high level of disorder
why does more particles mean more entropy
because the more particles you have, the more ways they and their energy can be arranged
why does more arrangements mean more stability
because theyre more energetically stable when theres more disorder, so particles move to increase their entropy
what does a ‘feasible’ reaction mean
the reaction happens itself, without the addition of any energy, even when the enthalpy change is endothermic
what is the formula for calculating enthalpy change
ΔS° = ΣS°(products) - ΣS°(reactants)
what is the defintion of standard entropy of a substance
is the entropy of 1 mole of that substance under standard conditions in standard conditions
how does the value for entropy of a product or reactant change if you have more than 1 mole of it in a balanced equation
you multiply the entropy for the reactant or product by the number of moles in the balanced equation
an increase in total entropy means that it is feasible for a reaction to occur, but why is it not a guarantee
because enthalpy, temperature and kinetics play a part in whether a reaction occurs or not
