Entomology Flashcards
Autolysis
Process of self-digestion (enzymes within the body’s cells begin a chemical breakdown of the cells and tissues)
Entomology
The study of insects
Putrefaction
More destructive process, caused by bacteria that destroy the body’s tissues
Putrefaction bacteria
Come mostly from the intestinal tract of the deceased, but environmental bacteria and yeasts may also contribute
Side effects are the release of gases that attract insects (primarily flies)
Forensic Entomology
Study of insects and their relation to a criminal investigation
Determined by insects…
- Estimated time of death
- Season of death
- Geographic location
Stage development is effected by…?
- Geographical location
- Climate
- Weather conditions
Carrion species
- Necrophagous
- Predators
Necrophagous
Feed directly on the corpse and parasites of the Necrophagous species - attracted to other animals or insects already feeding on the body
Ex. of Necrophagous
- Flies (Diptera)
- Beetles (Coleoptera)
Ex. of Predators
- Burying beetles (family silphidae)
- Rove beetles (family staphylinidae)
- Hister beetles (family histeridae)
- ants, bees, and wasps
3 ways of collection
- Aerial
- Hand
- Live sampling
Aerial collection
Sweep a net back and forth over the decomposing body. Place them in a large jar with ethyl acetate. After a few seconds, move the dead flies with a funnel into a vial of 75% ethyl alcohol
Hand collection
Collect a variety of maggots with forceps. Place them in boiling water to stretch them out and fix them.
Live collection
Collect 10-15 live maggots of varying sizes and drop them into a foil container.
