Enteral tubes Flashcards
nasogastric
-shorter
-nose into the stomach
Salem sump tube
-two separate channels
-one is am air vent the other is for drainage
leviers tube
-only one lumen.
- I same purposes as the Salem sump tube
-does not have the air vent lumen to allow equalization of vacuum pressure.
- Both the Salem sump and Levin’s tube are intended for short-term use only. Leaving them in place for more than 10 to 14 days can result in necrosis of the nasal septum.
reaction from NG tube in the lungs
Signs and symptoms of a tube entering the lungs include the following:
-The patient becomes cyanotic
-The patient is unable to make a verbal sound
-The patient is coughing spasmodically and uncontrollably
Standard formulas - Patients who can digest and absorb nutrients without difficulty but are unable to eat or swallow sufficiently Patients who need additional nutrition above their oral consumptio
Contain protein isolates from milk, soybeans, or a combination of purified protein
Hydrolyzed formulas -Patients who have compromised digestive or absorptive functions
macronutrients that are predigested, or have been partially or fully broken down to components that little digestion before absorption; are often low in fat and may be enriched with medium-chain triglycerides to ease digestion and absorption
high protein pts which have Burns
Large open wounds
Malnutrition
Contain normal nutrients with additional protein
Diabetic - type 1 and 2
reduced levels of simple carbs
renaL for pts w/ renAL insufficiency and failure
Contain reduced levels of potassium, sodium, and nitrogen
pulmonary pts w /Lung cancer Chronic emphysema Chronic asthma Pulmonary fibrosis
Provide 55% of the calories as fat so that less CO2 is produced as oxygen is consumed
fiber - pts w/DiverticulosisColon cancer
Diabetes Heart disease Those in long-term care
Contain higher levels of fiber
insertion of NG tube for gastric decompression
-prepare patient
-insert ng tube
-attach ng tube to suction
-maintain latency of ng tube
