ENTANCE-16 MARKER Flashcards
What is conformity?
A change in a persons behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people.
[AO1] What is normative social influence?
Going along with the majority with fear of rejection for the desire to be liked this leads to compliance.
What is compliance?
A temporary type of conformity where public behaviour is changed but we privately disagree with it in behaviour only last in the presence of the group.
What is the definition of identification?
A moderate type of conformity where we act the same way as the group because we want to be part of it but don’t necessarily agree with what the majority believes.
[AO1] What is informational social influence?
Going along with the majority due to the desire to be right, this leads to internalisation.
What is internalisation?
The deepest type of conformity where we take on the majority view so we can be certain we are right.
What is meant by social roles?
The parts people play as members of various social groups.
What is meant by the variable group size?
Increase the group size by adding more confederates thus increasing the size of the majority conformity increased with group group size but only up to point levelling off when the majority was greater than three.
What is meant by unanimity?
A dissenter was added to increase the unanimity. This decrease the conformity levels as they were not the only one.
What is meant by task difficulty?
Ashes line judging task is more difficult when it becomes harder to work out the correct answer conformity increased because naive participants assumed that the majority is more likely to be right.
What is meant by an internal or external locus of control?
People who have an internal locus of control believe that what happens to them is done by them and they are because of it people who have an external locus of control believe that it is down to other people and the influence of luck as to why things happen to them.

Individual differences in NSI
One limitation is the NSI does not predict conformity in every case.
Dispositional factors such as culture or locus of control could affect how much somebody wants to be liked.
McGhee and Teevan in 1967 found that nAffiliators (strong need for affiliation) were more likely to conform.
This shows that this NSI lies conformity more for some people than it does for others.
