Entamoeba histolytica Flashcards
Treatment
metronidazole
tinidazole
iodoquinol/paromomycin (asymptomatic cyst)
Pathogenesis
cysts ingestion -> fecal-oral transmission
no animal reservoir
Life cycle
trophozoites (colonic epit) -> secrete enzymes (local necrosis & inflammation) -> lesion (muscular layer) -> destry intestinal epit. -> submucosa -> invade portal circulation (liver systemic disease) -> intestinal disease (colon); amebic dysentry -> spread to LIVER, BRAIN, LUNG (extraintestinal disease)
Properties
amebic dysentry
liver abscess
Life cycle (important)
trphozoite
non motile cyst
Mature infective cyst
4 nuclei excystation divides to trophozoites
Mature trophozoites
1 nucleus, even peripheral chromatin, prominent central karyosome
