Define Leukoplakia
A white lesion to the tongue and mouth that is unable to be removed by rubbing it.
What is the significance of hairy leukoplakia?
It is a cause from EBV and can only been seen in HIV patients
Define Erythroplakia
Similar to that of leukoplakia except that it is red instead of white.
What would you expect to see with a patient that has Oral Lichen Planus?
A white lacy lesion in the mouth that requires biopsy to diagnose.
What makes oral cancers hard to detect early on?
They look very similar to Leukoplakia and Erythroplakia.
What are the risk factors for Leukoplakia?
Tobacco, Alcohol, and Dentures/Braces
What causes Oral Lichen Planus to be difficult to diagnose?
It has numerous distinct phenotypical sub types.
What are the key findings of Candidiasis?
Painful, curd-like white creamy patches that when rubbed off are erythematous areas.
What is the significance of candidiasis and HIV?
it is most often an AIDS-defining illness.
What do you expect to find to identify Candida Albicans with under a microscope?
The presence of Germ tubes
What would you prescribe as treatment for C. Albicans?
Nystatin mouth rinses TID or Hydrogen Peroxide Mouth Rinse.
