Complications of cholesteatoma (7)

A

Extracranial :VIIth nerve palsy, suppurative labarynthitis, perimastoid abscess
Intracranial: abscess, meningitis, sigmoid sinus thrombosis, hydrocephalus

Rx: SURGICAL
Central perf of TM safe, peripheral perf can lead to cholesteatoma

A

Bacterial- S.pneumoniae, s.pyogenes, M.catarrhalis, H.inf

Virus: RSV & Rhino >influenza, parainfluenza, adeno

What’s the difference between:

  • Herpangina
  • HSV gingivostomatitis
  • Ludwig angina
A

HERPANGINA: viral infection (usually coxsackie) with vesicles/ ulcers in posterior parts of oral cavity.

HSV GINGIVOSTOMATITIS: vesicles/ ulcers more anterior in oral cavity, including lips. Does not usually need antivirals.

LUDWIG ANGINA: Bacterial infection causing swelling +++ of submandibular and sublingual spaces. Can cause airway compromise.
