How do you inspect ear canal of adults?
pull up, out, and posterior
how do you inspect ear canal of children?
pull down, out, and posterior
What are the 3 different hearing tests?
Finger rub, whisper test, webber and Rinne
What is a normal whisper test?
if the patient can correctly repeat the sequence or after 2 sequences can identify 3/6
what is an abnormal whisper test?
patient incorrectly identifies 4/6
What is the weber test used for?
test for lateralization
how do you perform the webber test?
you place the vibrating tuning fork on top of the patients head or on the middle of the forehead
what is a normal webber test?
when sound lateralizes to both ears equally
what happens if sound lateralizes to one ear?
it is either conduction loss in that ear or sensorineural loss in the opposite ear
what is the rinne test used for?
it compares air and bone conduction
how do you perform auricular drainage?
the patient is lying supine, you place your third and fourth finger in front of and behind the patient’s ear and apply a clockwise and counterclockwise motion for 2 minutes
how do you perform mandibular drainage?
patient is supine and rotated head towards doc, physician is standing opposite side to treat; place fingers along posterior ramus of mandible, place hypothenar eminence along body of mandible; apply slow repetitive downward and midline traction on mandible
how should you stroke in cervical stroking?
slowly stroke along the cervical paravertebral muscles in a cephalad to caudal direction
where are the anterior chapman points for the middle ear?
superior, medial 1/3 of the clavicle
where are the anterior chapman points for the sinuses?
superior border of rib 2 and the inferior medial clavicle
