What are the presenting features of a herpes simplex virus type 1 infection ?
- Systemic upset
- Affects the lips, buccal mucosa, hard palate
- Causing Vesicles 1-2mm, Ulcers
What is the treatment of a HSV type 1 infection?
Aciclovir
After treatment what happens to HSV 1 ?
It establishes latency - it can then reactive as cold sores
What is Herpangina and hand foot and mouth disease caused by?
Enteroviruses - cocksakie virus
What is the presenting features of herpangina ?
Vesicles/ulcers on soft palate
Who is most commonly affected by both herpangina and HSV type 1 infections ?
Pre-school aged kids
How is HSV 1 infection, herpangina and hand foot and mouth disease all diagnosed ?
Swab of lesion in virus transport medium detection by PCR
What are the presenting features of hand foot and mouth disease ?
- Mouth ulcers
- Spotty red rash and blisters commonly on the hands and feet
Remember recurrent mouth ulcers can also be a sign of systemic disease - give some examples
- Coeliacs
- Inflam bowel disease
- Drug reactions etc
What mouth sign can syphilis cause ?
- Can cause a chancre ulcer which is a painless ulcer at the sight of entry of Treponema pallidum
- Most commonly genital but can be seen in the mouth
